What happened?

One of the sketches I did while in Italy. This is based on a sculpture tittled: "Ugo Foscolo Dopo il Trattato di Compoformio" by Odoardo Tabacchi. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of it since we weren't allowed to take pictures and I can't find one in the internet. However if you happen to go to the Museum of Modern Art in Rome, then you'll find it in there.
What intrigued me about the sculpture was the look on the captain (in this case Zuko) for one wonders why does he have that look on his face.
Which brings me to a little game here: what do you think happened?
I would very much like to know what you think, that way it will kill the boredom that is taking over me right now
